The target audience for this rock magazine is mainly the older generation between the ages of 25-40. This could be why the contents page is a double spread, because adult like to read more than teenagers do. This is also reflected through the mature and simple colour choice, red, white and black. This can also link both the front cover and content pages, making the whole magazine flow. The typeface is also serif which is more formal and mature.
The contents page and front cover are very similar in the way the the images are all in the middle and the cover lines are on the sides, in columns. Giving a very professional look and structured look. The amount of images contrast with the front cover as there is a total of nine images on the contents page compare to only one on the front cover. These pictures all have a number on them which identifies which page they are; they are all artist which would be recognised to the readers of this magazine so this helps them find who they want to see straight away. The subheadings are a narrative device which are separated either side; on the left is the 'features' and on the right is the 'regulars'. This gives the contents page a clear structure helping the reader find what they are looking for much easier.
The title is in a banner across the whole top of the page making it clear what the page is. A conventional thing about this magazine is the caption underneath the features. This is very effective as it gives the reader a small insight into they will be reading, and again helps them choose which features to read first by gaining the readers attention. It also gives the contents page a good structure as it is underneath every cover line.
The images are all employing a direct mode of address except one, which is a photograph taken at a performance, not at a photo shoot. by not using a direct mode of address it seperates the feature from the others. You can look at this image and automatically know it will be a review of a gig, however the other pictures your assume are interviews.
The majority of artist's in the images are male which could limit the audience however it may work the other way because the mays could be 'eye candy' for the women. By having the artists employ a direct mode of address, it makes the magazine look more professional and also gives the artists an edgy and intimidating look; relating to the rock genre of this magazine. Moreover, the images and page numbers placed over them help to orientate the reader by them being able to pick an article thats interest them and go straight to the page.
This contents page looks like a lot of effort has been put in by the use of a lot of images and how a lot is fit into one page but clearly and neatly. This makes it look more expensive and of high quality. Not a lot of English language techniques are used in the contents page just formal words, which help the older generation interact with the magazine.
A very unconventional but unique thing this magazine offers on its contents page is a short, brief review of the magazine; talking about the artists who are featured in the magazine. With having only two subheadings and the cover lines being titled more as a group, it limits how much information you know is in each section and may not entice the reader. So if the reader knows more about what artist they will be finding things out about, this could make them want to read the whole magazine. Moreover, instead of reading certain bits of the magazine, by limiting the detail in the contents page, it may encourage the reader to read everything as they do not know exactly where everything is.
